UPDATE FROM MEETING LAST NIGHT:
We have chosen the meeting schedule for our book club, and the decision is that we will meet on the last Wednesday of the month. This means our first official book club gathering will be held on Wednesday, June 30, 2010 at 7 pm. My lovely friend L (aka Laura) has graciously volunteered her new place for this first gathering. She lives in SL County, so us peeps from UT County are talking about all driving up together. If you're interested, post a comment here and I will email you with the details.
Now I know you're wondering what book we chose?? Okay, okay, here it is! The first book is:
Three Cups of Teaby Greg Mortenson and David Oliver Relin
From the back cover:
“Here (in Pakistan and Afghanistan), we drink three cups of tea to do business; the first you are a stranger, the second you become a friend, and the third, you join our family, and for our family we are prepared to do anything—even die.”
-Haji Ali, Korphe Village Chief, Karakoram Mountains, Pakistan
The astonishing, uplifting story of real-life Indiana Jones and his remarkable humanitarian campaign in the Taliban’s backyard
In 1993 a mountaineer named Greg Mortenson drifted into an impoverished Pakistan village in the Karakorum mountains after a failed attempt to climb K2. Moved by the inhabitants’ kindness, he promised to return and build a school. Three Cups of Tea is the story of that promise and its extraordinary outcome. Over the next decade Mortenson built not just one but fifty-five schools—especially for girls—in the forbidding terrain that gave birth to the Taliban. His story is at once a riveting adventure and a testament to the power of humanitarian spirit. Here are some other books that we discussed and will likely include in our first few months of books:
Island Beneath the Sea by Isabel Allende
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert
The Help by Kathryn Stockett
See you all on June 30!! Yay!
